Seven Ages Theatricals, Sheboygan’s Indie theatre company, is thrilled to present John Logan’s Never the Sinner, which tells the famous story of a murder committed one hundred years ago by Leopold and Loeb, two wealthy and intellectually effete Chicago boys. In 1924, the young 19-year-olds decided to prove their “ubermensch” acumen by committing “the perfect crime,” brutally murdering a teenage acquaintance, just for the thrill of it and to prove that they could. Unsurprisingly, a series of immature mistakes and their own arrogance brings them to court, where their families have solicited the great Clarence Darrow (of Scopes monkey trial fame) to defend them. The media had a field day with what was then called the “crime of the century” and the trial led to an impassioned debate on the death penalty which Darrow, while convinced of the boys’ guilt, was adamantly opposed to.
